This study investigates the concept of the intellectual and the social role of an intellectual along the process of nation building. By referring to the theoretical framework provided by Edward Said ve Antonio Gramsci, this study will be looking at the social roles and typologies attached to the intellectuals; especially in the Ottoman Turkish context. The historical context will be the transition period from the imperial sstem to the nation state. The focus will be on a geographer Faik Sabri Duran(1882-1943) who has an important role to connect between two ideologies, two systems and two mentalities. His texts and textbooks will be analysed with respect to his role as an intellectual, a director and as an author who is engaged in the nation building process. While the empire transforms into a nation state, geography was one of the significant disciplines that served to consolidation of the republic, hence Duran’s role will be evaluated along the relations between himself as an intellectual persona and the State.
