Skin condition and functioning are affected by environmental and endogenous factors leading to photoaging, inflammation, immune dysfunction, imbalanced epidermal homeostasis and skin disorders. Dietary consumption of specific foods and supplements was shown to provide protection against ultraviolet light, immune status and some skin disorders. In this review, we summarize the effects of vitamins, carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids and botanical antioxidants in the prevention of skin alterations.
