1453 yılında İstanbul’un Fatih Sultan Mehmet tarafından fethedilmesi Türk ve dünya tarihi için bir dönüm noktası olmuştur. Bu fetih II. Meşrutiyet’ten itibaren çeşitli şekillerde kutlanmaya başlanmıştır. Nitekim 1914 yılında İstanbul’un fethi ilk defa büyük bir törenle kutlanmıştır. 1939 yılına gelindiğinde Cumhurbaşkanı İsmet İnönü’nün talimatıyla 1953 yılında kutlanacak olan İstanbul’un fethinin 500. Yıldönümü için hazırlılar başlamıştır. Bu bağlamda 1941 yılında Milli Eğitim Bakanı Hasan Ali Yücel başkanlığında bir komisyon kurulmuştur. 1950 yılında ise Demokrat Parti’nin iktidara gelmesinden kısa bir süre önce Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi tarafından İstanbul’un fethinin 500.Yılı kutlamaları için “İstanbul’un Fethinin 500. Yılı ve Müteakip Fetih Yıllarını Kutlama Derneği” adıyla bir cemiyet kurulmuştur. Bu cemiyet maddi zorluklara rağmen Demokrat Parti döneminde de İstanbul’un 500. fetih yılı kutlama hazırlıklarına devam etmiştir. 29 Mayıs 1953 tarihinde İstanbul’da “İstanbul’un Fethinin 500. Yılı ve Müteakip Fetih Yıllarını Kutlama Derneği”, fethin 500. yılı nedeniyle on gün boyunca bilimsel, kültürel ve sanatsal birçok etkinlik düzenlenmiştir. Bu etkinliklere halk yoğun ilgi göstermiştir. Ancak bu törenlere Cumhurbaşkanı Celal Bayar ve Başbakan Adnan Menderes’in iştirak etmemesi dernek yönetimi ve halkta bir burukluğa neden olmuştur. Bu olayı dönemin basını da sert bir şekilde eleştirmiştir. İstanbul’un 500. fetih yılı etkinlikleri İstanbul’da olduğu gibi Muğla İlinin Milas İlçesi’nde de yapılmıştır. Bu dönemde Muğla’da çıkan “Muğla’da Demokrat Yayla Gazetesi” hem İstanbul’da hem Muğla’da hem de yurtdışında fetihle ilgili yapılan tüm etkinlikleri okuyucusuna günü gününe aktarmıştır.
The conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1453 was a turning point for Turkish and world history. This conquest was started to be celebrated in various ways since the Second Constitutional Monarchy. In 1914, the conquest of Istanbul was celebrated with a big ceremony for the first time. In 1939, upon the instructions of President İsmet İnönü, preparations began for the 500th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul, which would be celebrated in 1953. In this context, a commission was established in 1941 under the chairmanship of the Minister of National Education Hasan Ali Yücel. In 1950, shortly before the Democratic Party came to power, an association named "Association for the Celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul and the Subsequent Conquests" was established by the Republican People's Party to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul. Despite financial difficulties, this society continued its preparations for the celebration of Istanbul's 500th Conquest Anniversary during the Democratic Party period. On May 29, 1953, many scientific, cultural and artistic events were organized in Istanbul for ten days by the "Association for Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul and the Subsequent Conquest Years". The public showed great interest in these events. However, the fact that President Celal Bayar and Prime Minister Adnan Menderes did not attend these ceremonies caused disappointment in the association management and among the public. The press of the period also harshly criticized this incident. Events for the 500th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul were held in Milas District of Muğla Province, as well as in Istanbul. During this period, by the name of "Demokratic Yayla Newspaper in Muğla" was published in Muğla and conveyed to its readers all the events related to the conquest, both in Istanbul, Muğla and abroad, day by day.
