Abstract:

The mountains used in the classbooks during the teaching of music in the secondary school are mainly composed of chanted children's songs. However, the motivation for students to be distant from the popular music culture due to the popular culture in which they interact, whether they need their lifestyle, and therefore, has a negative impact on the motivation level. In this context, the purpose of the research is to identify the positive or negative effects of the use of popular music forms and accompaniments in the size of music teaching in high schools, based on the opinions of the musician teacher candidates. The research is an illustrative study of the situation. It is also a qualitative work in terms of the collection of data and the interpretation of the obtained data. The study group constitutes the last-class students who continue the course of American School Experience in Music Education at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University in the 2015-2016 educational year. For the purpose of the study, the four children's songs composed in popular music forms, selected by researchers to be applied primarily in high schools, were accompanied by popular music harmony and instruments. Later, in the Teaching Applied Courses, the fourth-class students who saw a bachelor's degree in the U.S. Music Education University of Mehmet Akif Ersoy were taught with both these accompanyings and songs as well as the children's songs included in the teacher's guide. At the end of the application, the opinions of the candidates for music teachers were received through the oral interview. The study has observed positive changes in the students' singing skills.
