Bu çalışmanın konusu “Odaklama” olgusunun edebi bir metinde nasıl işlendiğinin Emile Zola’nın “Claude’un İtirafları” romanından seçilen sözcelerden hareketle dilbilim çerçevesinde ve göstergebilimsel bir yaklaşımla incelenmesidir. Odaklama - düşünce bağlamı daha geniş bir tabirle “dil – zihin” dikotomisi dolayısıyla, derin yapı - yüzey yapı ilişkisinin, bir anlamda yazarın oluşturduğu söylemin sözcelerde nasıl odaklandığı araştırılacaktır. Araştırma bütünce temelli olduğundan, bu çalışmada seçilen ve kullanılacak olan bütünce, 19. Yüzyıl Fransız Edebiyatının dünyaca ünlü klasik yazar Emile Zola’nın “La Confession de Claude” (1865) adlı romanının Türkçe çevirisidir. Metnin derin okumasını yaptıktan sonra, romanda yazarın farklı söylemsel odaklama yaptığı bölümlerden yaklaşık 50 sözcenin seçimi ve sınıflandırması yapılmıştır. Romanda söylemsel odaklamanın sözcelerde oluşumu ve görünümü ile birlikte farklı odaklama göstergeleri ya da odaklayıcı göstergeler açıklanmaya çalışılacaktır. Böylelikle metindeki örtük söylemler de derin yapı bağlamında değerlendirilmiş olacaktır. Yazarın romanda oluşturduğu söylemi etkileyen unsurlar da göz önünde bulundurulacağı için toplumdilbilimsel bir bakış açısı da kaçınılmaz olacaktır. Çalışmanın kuramsal ve yöntemsel çerçevesini Genel Dilbilimin kurucusu F. de Saussure temel olmak üzere (Jakobson, Benveniste), Söylem Dilbilimi Kuramında kullanılan sözce ve söylem çözümlemesi yöntemi oluşturacaktır. Araştırmanın temel amacı romandan seçilen sözcelerde bir dilsel olgu olarak odaklamanın nasıl gerçekleştiğini ve çokdisiplinli pragmatik bir yaklaşımla açıklamaktır.
