Abstract:

In this study, in which conservative and secular (religious and laicist) youth’s perspectives and viewpoints towards each other are determined by Bogardus’ social distance scale, the stance of young people from two different dominant cultures from history, towards living together is discussed within the framework of B. Parekh’s theory of multiculturalism. Although the concepts of conservatism and religiosity, secularism and laicism have different meanings in the literature, it has been examined whether these concepts have the same meaning for young people participated in the study. While the perspectives of young people towards each other are examined through the criterion sample, it has been determined whether the factors of education, socio-economic level, location and gender affect the social distance of young people towards each other. In the study discourse analysis is used as well as non-parametric tests, which is one of the mixed research methods. It is determined in the study that the perspectives of conservative and secular youth towards each other vary due to factors such as education, gender, place and socio-economic. Moreover, it has been determined that concepts of conservatism and religiosity, secularism and laicism have the same meaning for young people.
