Nursing in Primary School Children’s View: A Primary School Example

INTRODUCTION: Evaluations of hospitalized children's perceptions about the nursing profession have been identified in literature, but no study investigating the perceptions of healthy children about nursing profession at primary school level has been found. The aim of this study is to evaluate the views of nursing students at Altındağ Atilla Primary School in Ankara Province. METHODS: This research is planned in a qualitative phenomenological design. 24 students were interviewed for the research until repeated data were obtained using a semi-structured interview form. In order to carry out the research, parents and children were informed and verbal consent was obtained from the children and written consent was obtained from their parents who agreed to participate in the research. The interviews were recorded as voice records, listened to, resolved and divided into themes by 2 researchers. RESULTS: 54.1% (n: 13) of students are 4th graders and 45.8% (n: 11) are 3rd graders. 62.5% (n: 15) of the students haven’t experienced hospitalization before. 28.2% (n: 7) of the students answered yes to the question of whether they would like to be nurses when they grow up. After the interviews, the themes of Treatment Practices, Assisting Doctors and Care Practices (Patient and Child) related to practices of nurses were determined in line with the answers received from the students.  DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It has been found that the students evaluate the nursing profession as an occupation that includes giving injection, implementing treatments, helping doctors, caring patients and children and healing the patients, and that most of the students do not want to be a nurse in the future.
