Hadis usul ve tarihinin teknik konularına dair çağdaş Batı akademisinde yazılmış sınırlı sayıda eserden biri, Garrett Davidson’ın doktora tezinden uyarladığı Carrying on the Tradition: A Social and Intellectual History of Hadith Transmission Across a Thousand Years isimli kitabıdır. Hadis rivayetinin bin yıllık serüveninin yedi ana başlık çerçevesinde takip edildiği bu eser, geniş kaynak yelpazesi, renkli anekdot kullanımı, teknik bilgi ile sosyal dokuyu iç içe tartışma gayreti gibi açılardan zengin bir okuma tecrübesi sunar. Yazarın usul ve teori odaklı bölümlerde kavramları alışıldık anlatının dışında bağlamlarla ele alması, literatür ağırlıklı bölümlerde eserleri arka arkaya sıralama kolaycılığına kaçmaması; bin yıllık bir süreci ele alırken dönemsel farklılıkların, sosyal dokunun ve ilmî sürecin ilmî kavramların anlamına ve uygulanma biçimine etkisi gibi noktaları da ele alması gibi hususlar eserin güçlü yanlarındandır. Carrying on Tradition’ın temel iddiası, başlıca hadis kitaplarının yaygınlaşıp otorite kazanmasının (canonization) ardından hadis rivayetinin durmadığı, ancak doğal bir değişim sürecine girdiği ve yüzleşilmesi gereken yeni problem alanlarına cevap üretebilmek adına hadis literatürü içerisinde yeni iddiaların ve türlerin doğduğudur. Yazara göre hadis rivayeti sınırlı kabiliyetleri olan arkaik bir gelenekten ibaret olmayıp bin yılı aşkın bir süre boyunca İslam dünyasında Sünni geleneğin ve ilmî kültürün temel unsurlarından biri olmaya devam etmiştir. Kitapta da hadis rivayetinin bu işlevini nesiller boyu korurken, ne gibi yeni roller kazandığını ve hangi türler içerisinde kendisine yer bulduğunu açıklamaktadır. Yazar, ele aldığı dönemler içerisindeki ilmî dinamikleri marjinal örnekler üzerinden tartışarak metnin gerilimini yüksek tutar. Çerçevenin boyutlarını göstermesi açısından anlaşılabilir bir tercih olmakla beraber, bu örneklem seçimi, bazı noktalarda dönemin genel teamüllerine karşı yanlış bir fikrin oluşmasına sebep olur.
One of the limited numbers of works written in the contemporary Western Academy on the technical subjects of the Hadith procedure and history is the book Carrying on the Tradition: A Social and Intellectual History of Hadith Transmission A Thousand Years, adapted by Garrett Davidson’s doctoral thesis. This work, which follows the thousand-year survival of the Hadis rivayet in the seven main titles, offers a rich reading experience in terms such as a wide range of resources, the use of colorful anecdotes, the technical knowledge and the effort to discuss the social tissue inside. The author’s process and theory-focused sections addresses the concepts with contexts other than the usual narrative, literature main sections do not escape the facility of classing the works backward in a thousand-year process, while periodic differences, the social touch and the scientific process also address points such as the impact on the meaning of the scientific concepts and the way of application. The main claim of Carrying on Tradition is that after the spread of the main hadith books and the gain of authority (canonization) the hadith rivayet did not stop, but entered a natural process of change and had to be faced in order to be able to respond to the new issues that had to be faced in hadith literature, new claims and kinds were born. According to the author, the hadith is not just an ancient tradition with limited capabilities and has continued to be one of the basic elements of the Sunni tradition and scientific culture in the Islamic world for more than a thousand years. In the book, the Hadith rivayet preserves this function for generations, explaining what new roles it has gained and what kinds of places it has found for it. The author discusses the scientific dynamics within the periods he deals with through marginal examples to keep the text high. While it is a clear choice in terms of the size of the frame, this sample selection causes a misconception against the general teamulates of the period at some point.
Davidson’s monograph titled Carrying on the Tradition: A Social and Intellectual History of Hadith Transmission Across a Thousand Years is one of the few contemporary Western academic books that specifically delve into the technical aspects of the history and methodology of hadith. While this choice is comprehensible in terms of showcasing the breadth of the framework, the selection of these particular samples occasionally leads to a misconception regarding the prevailing conventions of the period.
