Abstract:

Zamanın Bittiği Yer (Where Time Ends) is a symbolic novel with fantastic elements published by Can Eryümlü in 1999. The novel begins in a book, in a very different and extraordinary world from what is known. A "bookworm" who learns to read the pages of the books he eats leaves the book he was born in and begins a journey between books. He learns new information from every book he eats; As he learns, his curiosity increases. After a certain point, he begins to question his self, society, sexuality, faith, time, death and existence. The novel is based on the most basic understanding of human ethics, which can be described as a journey to "freedom". The bookworm, seeking freedom starting from the book with which he was born, reaches the Voyager 2 spacecraft launched on August 20, 1977, with the answers he finds despite his limited resources. Zamanın Bittiği Yer is a novel that asks the most fundamental questions about humans and their lives and touches on the concepts of existence and nothingness. Can Eryümlü adopts a critical attitude towards human and social norms by using the perspective of a bookworm. The author pays particular attention to social "norms" that hinder individual development. The aim of this study is to try to determine how the author handles the "philosophy of being and existential" questions and problems he places between the lines in the novel. The novel will be examined especially within the framework of Baruch Spinoza's views on the philosophy of existence. In addition to the structural and thematic analysis of the novel, some concepts in the novel that have symbolic values for people and society will also be touched upon.
