Abstract:

Social structure, economy, and developments in information technologies have effects on residential areas resulting the permeability between public and private sphere uses based on daily life habits, along with the interaction of social and physical environments. In this context, the housing problem demonstrates a multi-layered structure influenced by individual needs as well as societal dimensions, such as social, economic, and cultural factors. The primary objective of this research is to engage in a comprehensive exploration of the social aspect of housing which identifies the individual and society interactions according to the shared space uses and the public-private space hierarchy in residential areas. Additionally, the study seeks to investigate the intricate interplay between the physical environment and the social constructs formulated by inhabitants within their living spaces. This investigation will be centered on examining the spatial activities occurring in the residential environment, and how they contribute to the interactions between individuals and society. This study has two parts. The first part consists of etymological and conceptual analysis of five housing types among the multiple user types that contain public-domestic space interaction in terms of social aspect of housing. In the second part of the study, two examples from each housing type are spatially analyzed in order to examine the public-domestic sphere interaction in residential areas. The results of these analyses reveal instances where different housing types intersect and overlap. Emphasizing the social aspect of housing, this study opens a discussion on the interaction between public and domestic life through the spatial configuration of shared spaces in residential areas.
