Bu çalışmada, mobil telefonların Türkiye’de kullanılmaya başlandığı 1994 yılından günümüze mobil iletişim alanında yapılmış yüksek lisans ve doktora tezlerinin, alandaki durumu tanımlamak ve yeni araştırmalara yol göstermek amacıyla genel bir değerlendirilmesinin yapılması amaçlanmaktadır. Bu amaç çerçevesinde Yükseköğretim Kurulu (YÖK) Ulusal Tez Merkezi veri tabanından “mobil iletişim”, “mobil medya”, “mobil telefon”, “cep telefonu”, “akıllı telefon”, “mobil habercilik”, “mobil gazetecilik”, “mobil uygulamalar” ve “kablosuz iletişim” anahtar kelimeleri kullanılarak tarama yapılmış ve 1994-2022 yılları arasında iletişim bilimleri altında yazılan 38 tez çalışması, gerçekleştirilen araştırmanın konusu, amacı, bağlamı ve yöntemi de dikkate alınarak araştırmaların yoğunlaştığı temalar altında değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular, son yıllarda mobil iletişim alanıyla ilgili çalışmaların sayısında bir artış olduğunu göstermektedir. Araştırmacılar mobil iletişimi, genellikle mesleki dönüşüm, satın alma, pazarlama, kullanım motivasyonları, bağımlılık, mobil uygulamalar ve kullanıcı pratikleri gibi konular etrafında ele almışlardır. İncelenen çalışmalarda çoğunlukla nicel ya da karma yöntemler kullanılırken nitel araştırma yöntemlerine daha az başvurulmuştur. Buna paralel olarak yine eleştirel iletişim çalışmalarının sağladığı teorik perspektiften faydalanan az sayıda tez çalışmasına rastlanmıştır. Ayrıca; son yıllarda dünyada yapılan mobil iletişim çalışmalarındaki çeşitlilikle kıyaslandığında, Türkiye’nin hala bu araştırma çeşitliliğinin oldukça gerisinde kaldığı gözlemlenmiştir.
The aim of this study is to make a general assessment of the master's and doctor's theses in the field of mobile communications from 1994 to today, where mobile phones began to be used in Turkey, in order to identify the situation in the field and lead to new research. In the framework of this objective, the Higher Education Council (YOK) National Thesis Center data base "mobile communication", "mobile media", "mobile phone", "cep phone", "smart phone", "mobile communication", "mobile journalism", "mobile applications" and "cable communication" was scaned using keywords and 38 thesis studies written under communication sciences between 1994-2022 years, the subject, purpose, context and method of the conducted research was evaluated under the topics that research focused on. The findings show that in recent years there has been an increase in the number of studies related to the field of mobile communication. Researchers have dealt around topics such as mobile communication, often professional transformation, purchase, marketing, use motivations, addiction, mobile applications and user practices. In the studies examined, the use of quantum or mixed methods has been less applied to qualitative research methods. Parallelly, a few thesis studies were found again taking advantage of the theoretical perspective provided by critical communication studies. Also, compared to the diversity of mobile communications work done in the world in recent years, it has been observed that Turkey is still quite behind this diversity of research.
This study aims to provide a general evaluation of the current state of research in the field of mobile communication in Turkey, from the year 1994, when mobile phones were first introduced, to the present day, in order to identify research trends and provide guidance for future research. For this purpose, a search was conducted in the YOK Thesis Database using keywords such as “mobile communication,” “mobile media,” “mobile phone,” “cell phone,” “smartphone,” “mobile journalism,” “mobile applications,” and “wireless communication.” On this basis, 38 theses were identified in the discipline of communication sciences between 1994-2022. These were evaluated based on their topic, purpose, context, and methodology and grouped according to the themes they focused on. The findings indicate that there has been an increase in the number of studies related to mobile communication in recent years. Researchers have primarily focused on topics such as professional transformation, purchasing, marketing, user motivation, addiction, mobile applications, and user practices. While the studies examined used mostly quantitative or mixed methods, some employed qualitative research methods, though more rarely. Additionally, only a few theses utilized the theoretical perspectives provided by critical communication studies. Furthermore, it was observed that Turkey is still lagging behind in terms of research diversity compared to the variety of mobile communication studies conducted globally in recent years.
