Abstract:

This study discusses the development and transformation of Aliya İzzetbegovic's understanding of religion and nationalism in the context of religion and nationalism. The aim of the study is to reveal how Aliya İzzetbegovic views religion, what his opinions are on nationalism, and how Izzetbegovic's thoughts changed in the process. In addition, the importance of Islam in shaping the Bosnian national identity is also examined. Izzetbegovic's writings were investigated for this reason, and the descriptive analytical method was used to assess his perspectives on nationalism and religion. In this context, additional research on Aliya İzzetbegovic and the Bosnian national identity was also evaluated. The main thesis of this study is that Aliya İzzetbegovic's views on religion and nationalism can be divided into three different periods as Pan-Islamist, Pan-Yugoslavist and Islamist Nationalism in different time and environment in a consistent way. Analyzing Aliya İzzetbegovic's conception of religion and nationalism along a specific historical period and in the form of stages is crucial for improving our comprehension of his ideas as well as for shedding lights on the different forms of nationalism and the development of nationalist conceptions in Türkiye.
