Abstract:

Shipbuilding On The Danube River and The Size Of The Danube Navy
2023
Author:
Abstract:

While the Ottoman Empire was building its central navy in Tersâne-i Âmire, it was also building ships in the shipyards and ship stalls on the banks of the Danube River and giving them to the Danube navy administration. Especially, during the “War of the Holy League” that began after the Second Siege of Vienna in 1683 and along the wars that continued intermittently until 1718, the scale of activity of the Danube Navy increased significantly. Ottoman archival records include the shipyards where the navy was built; the types and numbers of ships built in the navy; repairment, maintenance and wintering of ships; they reveal the construction costs and expenses of ships in dozens of books and documents. In the light of these records and the information in the literature, the shipbuilding activities in the Danube River, the size of the navy that was prepared for the navigation and the issues related to the ships that were repaired and maintained after the navigation and the ones that were towed to the barracks were evaluated.
