Avrupa Komisyonu Başkanı Ursula von der Leyen, 2050 yılına kadar Avrupa'yı iklim açısından nötr hale getirecek bir Avrupa Yeşil Anlaşması önerme sözü vererek iklim değişikliğini birinci öncelik haline getirmiştir. Topluluk tarihinde ilk kez önerilen bu plan devrimci, stratejik ve yasal bir plan olup, Avrupa ekonomisi ve toplumu üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahip olacaktır.
Bu anlaşma, 2050 yılına kadar Avrupa Birliği'ni iklim nötr hale getirmek amacıyla karbondan arındırma ve sürdürülebilir ekonomik kalkınmayı hedefleyen bir önlemler paketidir. Böylece Avrupa'nın önümüzdeki on yıllarda klasik enerjiyi terk etmesini ve tamamen temiz enerjiye geçmesini hedeflemektedir. İklim nötr hedefine ulaşılması için Birlik tarafından birtakım önlemler alınması planlanmıştır.
