Abstract The demographic impact of the fertility regulation methods depends to a large extent on their correct use, so the objective of this study is to analyze the functional knowledge of these methods in two generations of women in Mexico. In addition, to study how certain sociodemographic factors influence the understanding of the correct use of contraceptives. The source of information used is the National Survey of Demographic Dynamics (ENADID by its acronym in Spanish) of 2018. The results reveal that functional knowledge is determined by women's sociodemographic characteristics such as: educational level, birth cohort, locality size or sociodemographic stratum. Finally, it’s observed that younger women are increasingly familiar with functional and effective knowledge of fertility regulation methods.
