Abstract:

Reading is a language skill that is needed at every stage of life, helps to acquire new knowledge and helps the individual in the development of mental skills. This language skill, which is the main way of getting information the concept of "reading habit" emerges when it becomes a habit. To transform into a habit of reading, first of all, the individual should love to read and not avoid reading. This is related to the individual's positive attitude towards reading. The aim of this research is to determine the reading habits of Turkish teacher candidates and to determine their attitudes towards reading. In this study where the screening model was used, the study group was selected by sampling method. The study group of study constitutes 148 Turkish teacher candidates studying at Fırat University Turkish Education Department. Likert type "attitude toward reading" scale prepared by Akkaya and Özdemir (2013) was applied to the candidates for "Personal Information Form" to determine their reading habits. The data obtained through form and scale used in the study were analyzed with SPSS 21.0 data analysis program. The relationship between the two variables was tested by the t-test, while for more variables the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. As a result of the research, it was determined that the general attitudes of the Turkish teacher candidates towards reading were "3.94" positive. Attitudes towards reading; gender, grade average and grade level were not significantly different. It is remarkable that the reading habits of the teacher candidates showing positive attitudes are not at the desired level.
