Abstract:

Fairy tales are a literary genre consisting of extraordinary characters and events. In addition to being extraordinary, they hold an important place in literature by embodying not only the perspective and thoughts of society but also aspects of everyday life. Fairy tales have been sustaining their presence in our literature for centuries, either originating from society or reaching readers through translation. Andersen’s fairy tales, by means of translation, have taken a place among the frequently read tales for many years in Turkish children’s literature. The purpose of this research is to examine the elements of violence and fear in twenty tales selected from one hundred and fifty-six tales and stories by Hans Christian Andersen. The data of the research, in which a qualitative method was adopted, are the books called Andersen Tales, published by Pinhan Publishing consisting of three volumes. The data obtained from the books are presented through document analysis. The analysis revealed that it is appropriate to examine the elements of violence and fear in the fairy tales under four categories. Subsequently, the elements of violence and fear were depicted in tables and supported with examples from the book. In line with the findings obtained, it is suggested that some of the tales in Andersen’s tales contain elements that are not suitable for children and it is recommended that these tales not be read to children without expert opinion, as they may lead to negative consequences.
