Abstract:

In this study, the movements of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in the past years are periodically examined in order to see what can be done about a sustainable environment in Turkey. The analysis covers the time period 1970-2022. In this context, 15 critical periods affecting GDP and CO2 emissions in Turkey were examined by using the least squares method with structural break. The most important finding obtained as a result of the study is that the EKC hypothesis does not remain constant with a single shape such as U, inverted-U, N, but can periodically draw all these graphs at the same time. In addition, it is among the findings of the study that the M-shaped graph is also valid in the Turkish economy. In the analyzes made, it is aimed to release less CO2 emissions to the environment with production, to reduce costs, to facilitate the finding of resources and to provide technological developments to prevent environmental pollution in production, as well as to be a party to environmental agreements to prevent environmental pollution, etc. It is also among the results reached in the study that it depends on the factors. The study is thought to have the first feature as no similar study has been encountered in terms of periodic analysis of the EKC hypothesis with the refractive test covering 15 critical dates compared to the time series analyzes made in the Turkish sample.
