Küreselleşme ve yeni nesil teknolojilerinin hızla gelişmesiyle birlikte gittikçe dijitalleşen ekonomide yeni bir yatırım aracı olarak kripto para ortaya çıkmış ve insanların günlük hayatlarına nüfuz ederek ilgi odağa haline gelmiştir. Gün geçtikçe kripto para yatırımcılarının artmasında internet ve sosyal medyanın rolü büyük bir etken oluştururken, dijital iletişim çerçevesinde popüler bir eğlence unsuruna dönüşen internet memler (memes) ise yeni kripto para birimlerinin doğmasına vesile olmakta ve bunların kripto para piyasasında öne çıktığı görülmektedir. Postmodern dönemde İnternet mem ve kripto para kavramlarının bir sentezi olarak ortaya çıkan “meme coin” kavramı, internette gündeme oturup yüksek etkileşimli paylaşımlarından ilham alınarak piyasaya çıkartılan ve sosyal medyada etkili isimlerin onları sanal ortamda konu etmesi sonucunda kısa sürede popülerlik kazanan kripto para birimlerine verilen isimdir. Meme coinlerin en önemli karakteristikleri arasında spesifik bir temaya sahip olmaları, çoğu zaman şaka amaçlı oluşturulmaları, ilgi çekici görseller şeklinde tezahür etmeleri ve büyük çevrimiçi kitlelere viral paylaşımlar sonucunda ulaşmalarıdır. Bu bağlamda Dogecoin, efsanevi bir internet mem olan ve “Doge” olarak anılan bir Shiba Inu cinsi köpeğinden esinlenmiş espirili bir köpek temasına dayanmaktadır. Dogecoin, 2013 yılında piyasaya çıktığı andan itibaren çok fazla ilgi görmüş, ancak özellikle Elon Musk’ın yoğun sosyal medya paylaşımlarının desteği ile milyar dolarlık değer kazanan ciddi bir kripto varlık haline gelmiştir. Meme coin oldukça yeni bir kripto para birimi olması sebebiyle bu konuda akademik çalışmalara henüz pek rastlanmamaktadır. Bu durumdan yola çıkarak çalışmanın amacı, dijital kültürün bir unsuru olan internet memlerden esinlenen ve kripto paraya dönüşen “meme coin” fenomenini ilk ve en popüler örneği olan Dogecoin üzerinden kavramsal bir yaklaşım ile incelemektir.
With globalization and the rapid development of the new generation of technologies, cryptocurrency has emerged as a new investment tool in the increasingly digitalized economy and has become the focus of interest by infiltrating people’s daily lives. The role of the internet and social media is a major factor in the growth of cryptocurrency investors on a daily basis, while the internet memes (memes), which are becoming a popular entertainment element in the digital communication framework, are becoming an opportunity for the birth of new cryptocurrencies, and they appear to be prominent in the cryptocurrency market. The "meme coin" concept, which emerged as a synthesis of the Internet memes and cryptocurrencies concepts in the postmodern era, is the name given to cryptocurrencies that came up on the agenda on the internet and were introduced to the market by being inspired by high interactive sharing and influential names on social media as a result of them being discussed in the virtual environment. Among the most important characteristics of breast coins is that they have a specific theme, they are often created for the purpose of joking, they manifest themselves in the form of interesting images and reach large online masses as a result of viral sharing. In this context, Dogecoin is based on a spiral dog theme inspired by a Shiba Inu-gender dog, a legendary internet mammal and called "Doge". While the role of the internet and social media is a big factor in the increase of cryptocurrency investors day by day, internet memes, which have turned into a popular entertainment element within the framework of digital communication, are instrumental in the birth of new cryptocurrencies that come to the fore in the cryptocurrency market. “Meme coin”, a synthesis of the notions of internet meme and cryptocurrency emerging in the postmodern period, is the name given to cryptocurrencies that are on the agenda in the internet environment, inspired by highly interactive shares, and that gain popularity in a short time as a result of influential names in social media talking about them in the virtual environment. Among the most important characteristics of meme coins are that they have a specific theme, often are created as a joke, manifest in the form of interesting images and reach large online audiences as a result of viral shares. In this context, Dogecoin is based on a humorous dog theme inspired by the legendary internet meme of a Shiba Inu dog referred to as “Doge”. Dogecoin has attracted a lot of attention since its launch in 2013, but especially with the support of Elon Musk’s intense social media posts, it has become a serious crypto asset that has gained billions of dollars. Since meme coin is a fairly new cryptocurrency, there are few academic studies on this subject yet. Based on this situation, the aim of the study is to examine the phenomenon of “meme coin”, inspired by internet memes as an element of digital culture turning into a cryptocurrency, by its first and most popular example Dogecoin with a conceptual approach.
