Abstract:

The elections that make up the foundation of democracy have a very important place in the context of the participation of the people in the government and the domination of the government. The elections held in the pre-Republic period were extended with the rights recognized after the proclamation of the Republic. The election of the local governments began to be determined by the central appointment before and later by the elections. This is the way that the people have the right to speak. In Turkey on March 31, 2019, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality presidential election was won by the National Alliance candidate Ekrem Imamoğlu. After the announcement of the election results, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the Republican Alliance, which is located within the wing of the Republican Alliance, have made objections to the High Election Board (YSK) on the grounds of failure in the elections in Istanbul. The YSK, which assessed the objections, announced that the election of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was cancelled on May 6, 2019 with the allegation that the election was failed. After the cancellation decision, on 23 June 2019 the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's presidential election was decided to be repeated. The aim of this study is to analyze how the decision to cancel the election of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality held on 31 March 2019 was presented in the newspapers. The study examined the national newspapers published on May 7, 2019. In this study, 20 newspapers analyzed the news of the election cancellation decision on the first page. The study was analyzed using the critical speech analysis method to reveal the titles, images and characters that the newspapers use in their news on the subject and what they want to say with points. The findings of the study have found that the manuscripts examined in the framework of the ideologies of the newspapers in which they were published and that the owners of the newspapers were shaped in the framework of the party or political view. As a result, examples have been found to show that the statements of independence and neutrality of the newspapers are not consistent with the truth. With regard to the analyzed news, it is possible to clearly see the side that the newspapers defend and support through images and texts.
