Gazzali, who was one of the most prominent figures in Islamic world during the Middle Ages, was theologian, Sufi and thinker and he seek to certain knowledge (yakin) through scepticism as a method and fell into great questioning. In his investigation Gazzali argues many issues, such as reason, self, intuition, causality, which are discussed also many other philosophers, through philosophical style and affected many thinkers both in east and west. Following these effects, it can be easily seen that there are some similarities between his and other philosophers’ explanations. French philosopher René Descartes is such a philosopher who shares some similarities with Gazzali. So, in this article, it will be tried to show these similarities and also differences based on chosen works of Gazzali and Descartes. But before that in the introduction, it will be presented how much Gazzali was known during the 12th and 13th century in the Latin West. This will show the reader the possibility of Gazzali’s effect on later periods on western thinkers, especially on Descartes. In the last part, it will be tried to argue that whether Descartes know about Gazzali’s Works or not based on some discussions in the literature.
The Islamic world has grown up and is referred to as "Hüccet'ul Islam" (the witness of Islam) by the vocalist, mutasavvıf and philosopher Gazzali (d. 450/1058, p. 505/1111 He has entered into a large question by using the method of doubt in search of accurate information (approximate). In his research, many philosophers, such as mind, spirit, intuition, causality, also discuss the issues on the agenda in a philosophical manner, has influenced many thinkers in the east and west in this sense. When these effects are followed, the similarity between the explanations of Gazzali and the thoughts of other philosophers is not missing. One thought that has some similarities with the Gazzali and is the subject of discussion is the French philosopher René Descartes (d. of 1650). Discourse on the Method of Descartes, when it comes to his works such as Meditations, is similar to what Gazzali made in his works such as El-Munkiz mine'd-dalâl, Chemistry Sa'ad. In this article, first and foremost, after the attempt to reveal the consciousness of Gazzali in the context of the influence of the Islamic thought on the West, we will try to point out the similarities and differences between the explanations of the Gazzali in the aforementioned works and the explanations of Descartes. In the last part, Descartes will try to contribute to the debate whether or not he knows the works of Gazzali.
