Abstract:

This study focuses on the use of materials in the social studies course. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of using educational comics and educational cartoons as teaching material in 6th-grade social studies course on students' attitude and motivation. Educational comics and educational cartoons were used as teaching materials in different experimental groups and their effects on students' attitudes and motivations towards the social studies course were tried to be determined. In the study, quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest control group, which is one of the quantitative research designs, was used. The study was carried out in three different schools located in a city center. The data was collected from 260 6th-grade students. There are two experimental groups and a control group in the study. Social Studies Attitude Scale and Social Studies Motivation Scale were used as a data collection tool. These scales were applied once before and after the lecture process. One-Way ANOVA and Paired-Samples t Test were used to analyze the data. According to the findings obtained as a result of the analysis of the data, there was a significant difference in the attitudes and motivation levels of the students between the experimental group in which educational comics were used and the control group. Likewise, a significant difference was observed between the experimental group in which educational cartoons were used and the control group. However, no significant difference was observed between the experimental groups. According to the results of the research, it can be said that the use of both educational comics and educational cartoons in the social studies positively affects the attitudes and motivations of the students towards the lesson. For this reason, researchers suggest that teachers who want to attract their students to the lesson should consider educational comics and educational cartoons as an effective alternative. Researchers also suggest that future studies should determine teachers' views on educational comics and educational cartoons.
