M.Ö. 5. yy.da (M.Ö. 495-435) yaşadığı kabul edilen Empedokles, ozan, devlet adamı, hatip, dini lider ve filozof kimliği ile kendinden önce gelen doğa bilimcilerinin görüşlerine spritüel bir yorumlama getirerek yeni bir düşünce yapısı tesis etmiştir. Evrenin özünü oluşturan ilk maddenin sorgulamasına güçlü bir iddia ortaya koyarak evrenin varoluşunda tek bir maddenin temel teşkil etmediğini öne sürmüş ve dört element kuramını ortaya atmıştır. Bu fikrini savunmak için dinsel olguları kullanmış ve tanrısal varlıkların sahip olduğu niteliklerin her birinin bir elementi simgelediğini ifade ederek felsefi çıkarımlara dinsel bir yaklaşım kazandırmıştır. Empedokles, fikri hayatına efsanevi bir kimlik katarak yaşadığı dönemin toplumuna mistik bir anlayış getirmeyi başarmıştır. Böylece doğa filozoflarının salt metodik düşünce yapısını olağandışı bir dinsel örgüye büründürmüş ve mitolojik bir anlatış ile bilimi arka plana atan bir doktrini desteklemiştir. Bu nedenle hayatı ve düşünceleri kendinden sonraki dönemlerde bile ciddi bir merak uyandırarak üzerinde yüzyıllarca tartışma konusu olmuştur. Bu çalışmada asırlarca süren bu açmaz üzerine farklı bir söylem sunarak Empedokles felsefesinin hellenik unsurlarının dışında başka hangi kültür ile bağlantısı olabileceğini ve dönemsel yorumlamaların meydana getirdiği yanlış algılamaların üzerinde durulmaktadır. Özellikle Orphizm akımının sebep olduğu dinsel etkileşim ile Mısır felsefesinin Yunan düşünce yapısına olan etkisi ve bu kültürde yetişen filozofların iki kültürün yer aldığı katışık yapıda nasıl seyir aldığı çalışmanın temel savını oluşturmaktadır.
by M. 5th edition (m. 495-435) The Empedocles, which is believed to be living, established a new thought structure by bringing a spiritual interpretation to the views of natural scientists who came before him, with the identity of ozan, state man, hatip, religious leader and philosopher. He raised a strong claim to the question of the first matter that formed the essence of the universe, suggesting that in the existence of the universe, a single matter does not form the basis, and revealed the theory of four elements. He used religious facts to defend this idea and gave a religious approach to philosophical conclusions by expressing that each of the qualities that the divine beings possess is a symbol of an element. Empedocles succeeded in bringing a mysterious understanding to the society of the time he lived by adding a legendary identity to his thought life. Thus, the purely methodical thinking structure of the philosophers of nature has been incorporated into an unusual religious organization and a mythological narrative has supported a doctrine that puts science in the background. Therefore, his life and his thoughts have been the subject of debate for centuries, even in the subsequent periods, raising a serious curiosity. In this study, a different speech on this centuries-long discretion is presented and focused on what other culture the Empedocles philosophy can be linked with except the hellenic elements and the misconceptions that periodic interpretations produce. Specifically, the religious interaction caused by the Orphism stream and the influence of Egyptian philosophy on the Greek thought structure and the basic argument of the study of how philosophers raised in this culture have seen the combined structure of the two cultures.
