The Effect Of Material Supported Science Course On Students' Awareness Of Technology Usage

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of material supported science course on 6th grade students' awareness of technology usage. The research was conducted in the spring semester of 2017-2018 with sixth grade students in a secondary school in the central district of Kahramanmaraş. The study was carried out with a total of 39 students for five weeks, 20 of them were experimental group and 19 of them were control group. Material-supported activities were used in the experimental group, and activities based on the current curriculum were used in the control group. The research was conducted with mixed method, where qualitative and quantitative research methods were used together. The quantitative data were obtained by using ‘Awareness Scale for the Technology Usage’ and qualitative data were obtained by using semi-structured interview form. In the analysis of quantitative data, dependent and independent groups t-tests, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, Mann Whitney U-test and Kruskal Wallis H test were used by using SPSS 22 program. The analysis of the qualitative data was made by the content analysis method. The results of the research show that the material-supported science course increases awareness of technology usage and that students’ awareness of technology usage don’t differ in terms of their genders, family income levels and technological tool ownership variables.
