YABANCI UYRUKLU ÖĞRENCİLERİN SOSYAL DESTEK ALGILARI İLE PSİKOLOJİK İYİ OLUŞ VE YAŞAM DOYUMLARININ İNCELENMESİ: VAN YÜZÜNCÜ YIL ÜNİVERSİTESİ ÖRNEĞİ

Abstract:

Bu çalışmada, Van Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi’nde (YYÜ) öğrenim gören yabancı uyruklu öğrencilerin sosyal destek algıları ile psikolojik iyi oluş ve yaşam doyumlarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada, 2016-2017 eğitim-öğretim yılı güz döneminde Van YYÜ’nin farklı bölümlerinde öğrenim gören 14 farklı ülkeden gelen 138 yabancı uyruklu öğrenci katılımcı olarak yer almıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Çok Boyutlu Algılanan Sosyal Destek Ölçeği, Psikolojik İyi Oluş Ölçeği, Yaşam Doyumu Ölçeği ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Analizlerde frekans dağılımı, aritmetik ortalama, bağımsız örneklemeleri için t testi ve Pearson Momentler Çarpımı Korelasyon Katsayıları teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlara göre, yabancı uyruklu öğrencilerin sosyal destek algısı, psikolojik iyi oluş ve yaşam doyumu düzeylerinin birbirini olumlu etkilediği kadınların aileden algıladıkları sosyal desteğin erkeklerden yüksek olduğu saptanmıştır. Türkçe bilme düzeyinin bu öğrencilerin sosyal destek algısı, psikolojik iyi oluş ve yaşam doyumlarını Türkçeyi iyi bilmeyenlere oranla daha yüksek oranda etkilediği görülmüştür. Türkiye’de 4 yıl ve daha fazla yaşayanların daha az yaşayanlara oranla sosyal destek algılarının daha yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. Sonuçlar bir bütün olarak değerlendirildiğinde, gerçek ya da algılanan sosyal bir desteğe sahip olmanın psikolojik iyi oluş ve yaşam doyumunu arttırmada etkili olduğu ayrıca psikolojik iyi olma durumu açısından da koruyucu bir işleve sahip olduğu söylenebilir. Elde edilen bulgular ilgili alanyazın ışığında tartışılarak öneriler sunulmuştur.

This study aims to study the psychological well-being and satisfaction of life with the perceptions of social support of foreign nationals studying at the Van Hundred Years University (YYU). The study included 138 foreign students from 14 different countries who studied in the various departments of Van YYU during the 2016-2017 educational year as participants. The data of the study was collected through the Multidimensional Detected Social Support Scale, the Psychological Wellbeing Scale, the Lifetime Scale and the Personal Information Form. Analysis has used t tests for frequency distribution, arithmetic average, independent sampling, and Pearson Moment Relationship Correlation Scorecard techniques. According to the results of the study, the perception of social support, psychological well-being and levels of life satisfaction of foreign students have a positive impact on each other; the social support that women perceive from the family is higher than men. The level of Turkish knowledge has been shown to have a higher impact on these students’ perception of social support, psychological well-being and life satisfaction than those who do not know Turkish well. In Turkey, those who live for 4 years or more have a higher perception of social support than those who live less. When the results are assessed as a whole, it can be said that having a real or perceived social support is effective in increasing psychological well-being and life satisfaction and also has a protective function in terms of the state of psychological well-being. The findings obtained were discussed in the light of the relevant area.

The present study aims to examine the social support perceptions, well-being, and life satisfaction of foreign students who are enrolled in Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYU) during 2016-2017 Fall semester. Participants consist of 138 foreign students from 14 different countries. Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire, Life Satisfaction Scale and Demographical Information Questionnaires were used for data collection. For descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, mean and standard deviations were examined. For inferential statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, and Independent Samples t-tests were conducted. The results indicate that perceived social support, well-being, and life satisfaction levels of foreign students are positively related; and women’s perceived social support levels from their families were higher compared to the men. The comprehension of Turkish language also affected the study variables. Foreign students who comprehend Turkish better have higher levels of perceived social support, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction. Students who have lived in Turkey for 4 years and more have higher perceived social support levels compared to the ones who have lived less. All in all, the results indicated that having whether perceived or actual social support increases psychological well-being and life satisfaction. Moreover, it has a preventive function on psychological well-being.
