Abstract:

In this study, al-Mâturîdî’s perception of Mu’tazila is discussed. It has been conducted by the viewpoint of his books, Te’vilâtu’l-Kur’an and Kitabu’t-Tevhid which surely belong to him and some copies of them are available in libraries. Although he talks about almost every Islamic sect in the Classical Islamic sources, the study will only focus on Mu’tazila. Mainly this paper’s focus is: His aim of studying Mu’tazila, his naming it, the way that he deals with it, the Mutazilites scholars he mentioned and his discussions with them, various Islamic sects, and their similarities to Mu’tazila and some religions and unaccepted sects in Islam and finally his critics about Mu’tazile within this context. Maturidi accepted Hasan el-Basrî, Ebu’l-Huzeyl el-Allaf, Ebû Ali el-Cübbâî, İbr ahim b. Seyyâr en-Nazzâm, Cafer b. Harb, Ebû’l-Kâsım el-Ka’bî el-Belhî, Ebû Îsâ el-Verrâk, İbnu’r-Râvendî, Ebû Bekir el-Asamm, Muhammed b. Şebîb, Ahmed b. Sehl, Ebû Zeyd el-Belhî (d. 322/934), Ömer el-Bâhilî as the scholar of Mutazili School. He criticised all of them; especially El Kabi is the one who was criticised by him. It has been studied to determine the perception of Mutezila in Maturidi’s thought through a general method without working them in detail. In conclusion, there will be summary of the thought that we got.
