Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this study is to systematically analyze the current information and work on the aromatherapies used in childbirth, to bring recommendations on the use in our country’s abortion care model and to lead the research to be carried out on this topic. Method: Scopus, PubMed, EBSCO host, Science Direct and National Thesis Center, Journal Park, Ulakbim, Turkish Medline and Turkish Reference Directory search engines were used for the study and 82 articles accessed were included in this study. In the last 18 years (January 2000-October 2018), using the keywords "aromotherapy and birth pain" and "aromotherapy and birth" the full text in English and Turkish was studied by randomized controlled experimental studies, systematic examination and meta analysis studies. Results: 30 studies have been excluded in terms of inappropriate work. The PRISMA (2009) report was analyzed based on the criteria. In the analysis, 18 studies were randomized controlled and 6 were experimental. 2 systematic studies, 2 meta analysis, 1 retrospective and 1 prospective study were also observed. The most of the research was done in Iran. There are only two works in our country. The result: Aromatherapies used in childbirth can reduce anxiety, facilitate relaxation and relieve birth pain. The study also positive effects on fatigue, birth date, birth results and mother’s satisfaction. It is also believed that it is necessary in our country to be granted qualifications to use complementary treatments to parents and nurses, to obtain strong evidence with randomized controlled and meta-analysis studies.
