Abstract:

ABSTRACT This research was carried out within the scope of the doctoral (PhD) dissertation, which is being prepared with the title of “The Role of Children’s Literature Works in Gaining Identity and Personality in Turkish Education”. In this study, interviews were carried out with the Turkish teachers who teach 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades in secondary schools. As a result of these interviews with the Turkish teachers, the books named “The Little Prince”, “My Grandpa’s Grocery” and “Momo”, which are in the top three of the list of books that the Turkish teachers recommend to their students, were analysed in terms of the aphorisms they contain. In this study, it is aimed to determine the aphorisms in the aforementioned reading books, based on the statement that wise sayings–laconisms (apothegm, proverbs, idioms, aphorisms, graffiti, motto, placard, etc.) should be included in the Turkish Course Curriculum at the secondary school level. The subgoal of this study is to determine the suitability of the prementioned aphorisms for the purposes of Turkish course and also to determine under which topics they affect the self–improvement and identity acquisition of the students. In this research carried out according to the content analysis method, the aphoristic expressions in the above-mentioned books were categorized and each book was evaluated on separately. It has been identified that the aphorisms determined in all three books are generally related to “humanitarian values / human relations” and also it has been identified that the considerations about “natural elements”, “occupations” and “time concept” come into prominence specifically for each book. The books named “The Little Prince” and “My Grandpa’s Grocery”, were found to have many aphorisms with negative contents about adults.
