Abstract:

In the first centuries of the Hijra, the term khabar al-wāḥid was used in the sense of the news of one or a few people. However, the issue of khabar al-wahid was one of the debates that remained on the agenda due to the influence of the theological disagreements. Among the ḥadīth books compiled until the third century of the Hijra, only al-Bukhārī dealt with the issue of the khabar al-wāḥid in a separate chapter called “Kitab al-akhbār al-āḥād” in al-Jāmiʿ al-ṣaḥīḥ. al-Bukhārī’s treatment of this issue in a separate chapter in his work has been interpreted in terms of his jurisprudential identity. However, al-Bukhārī’s inclusion of this topic in his work can be interpreted as being influenced by his predecessors. As a matter of fact, it has been stated by commentators that al-Shāfi'ī was al-Bukhārī’s source on this subject. In this study, al-Shāfi'ī’s views on haber al-wāḥid are analyzed in terms of being a source for al-Bukhārī. The research on the subject is limited to al-Bukhārī’s al-Jāmiʿ al-ṣaḥīḥ and al-Shāfi'ī’s al-Umm and al-Risāla. Thus, as a result of the comparison of the aforementioned works of the two authors, it was aimed to determine whether al-Shāfi'īand al-Bukhārī were the sources for the issue of khabar al-wāḥid. The research has tried to realize its aim by moving from the examples used by each author. Therefore, the inductive method was used in this study.
