Abstract:

Maps are tools that enable people to concretely perceive many features of the country and the world. The skill that emerges in the use of this tool is called map literacy. Map literacy is a skill that should be taught to students in curriculum. Map literacy, one of the social studies course skills, is included in the "People, Places and Environments" learning area in the 4th grade of primary school. The responsibility for teaching this skill to students falls on classroom teachers. It is thought that it is important to determine how much classroom teachers have this skill in order to provide students with map literacy skills. In this research, in which both descriptive and causal scanning models were adopted, 567 classroom teachers selected randomly and on a voluntary basis from the universe of classroom teachers working throughout Turkey constituted the sample of the study. Parametric and nonparametric tests were used in the analysis of the data collected with the help of the scale. According to the research results; Map literacy levels of classroom teachers are high. It was determined that the map literacy levels of classroom teachers did not vary according to gender and the grade level in which the responsibility for education was undertaken, but showed significant differences according to their seniority. It is understood that the map literacy levels of newly graduated classroom teachers with 1-5 years of experience are significantly higher.
