Abstract:

Cultivating of human is an important issue. Especially the issue of how the human to be cultivated should be is more important. For this reason, cultivating human blended with values has become the wish of every society and state, and cultivating good people has been on the agenda of education studies. The development of a human being, who exists in a world woven with values from the moment he is born until his death, is fed by sources such as families, schools, social environment, peer groups, non-governmental organizations and mass media. Considering the conditions of the current era and the course of the world, it seems inevitable to have an education for values. It is necessary to include various methods, techniques and practices in order for such an education At this point, literary works loaded with many values about human and life can turn into a source that can benefit from its power.to be transferred to life beyond giving advice and to be effective and permanent. Because it would not be correct to say that literary works are only expressions accompanied by aesthetic concerns. These works teach love, respect, sharing, compassion, being truthful instead of lying, friendship instead of enmity, love instead of jealousy, forgiveness instead of hatred, hope instead of despair and many other things. Undoubtedly, it is noticed that this context is taken into consideration in the works of Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910), a world-renowned writer. In this study, one of his stories, called A Spark Neglected Burns The House, will be examined in terms of values education. This story has been personally chosen to show what a great virtue forgiveness is in today’s world where many fires are experienced because of nothing. “Forgiveness” was determined as the basic value expected to be gained in the story and the main idea of the story was built on this value. Other values aimed to be gained in the story were determined as “respect”, “benevolence”, “helpfulness”, “hardworking”.
