Turizm sektörü dünyada hızla büyüyen ve ülkemizde mevcut tarihi-kültürel kaynakların iyi değerlendirilmesi durumunda bugünden çok daha iyi seviyelere gelebilecek bir sektördür. Turizm sektörünün ülke bazında geliştirilmesi ve bu sektörden elde edilen gelirin arttırılması için öncelikli olarak turizm işletmelerinin sayı ve kapasitelerinin arttırılması ve bu artışa paralel olarak da hizmet kalitesinin en üst seviyeye çekilmesi gerekmektedir. Hizmet kalitesi ise turizm sektöründe çalışan personelin dil becerisi ile doğrudan bağlantılıdır. Ülkemizi ziyaret eden turistlerle önyargılara sebep olmayacak sağlıklı bir iletişim kurmak, tarihi ve kültürel değerlere sahip yerleri kusursuz bir şekilde tanıtmak iyi bir dil becerisiyle mümkündür. Dolayısıyla turizm sektörüne iyi bir dil eğitimi almış ve sektörde kendini iyi yetiştirmiş elemanlar kazandırmak önem kazanmaktadır. Dil ve turizm arasındaki bu bağlantıdan yola çıkarak, bu çalışmada Turizm Fakülte ve Yüksekokullarındaki lisans ve lisansüstü programlarında verilen dil eğitimine yönelik dersler analiz edilmiş ve bu derslerin turizm sektörüne iyi derecede dil becerisine sahip elemanlar yetiştirme konusunda yeterli olup olmadığı tartışılmıştır. Ayrıca iyi dil bilen elemanlar yetiştirmek için turizm ile ilgili lisans ve yüksek lisans programlarının iyileştirilmesi için öneriler getirilmiştir. Araştırma materyali olarak 68 üniversitenin müfredatları kullanılmıştır. Çalışma betimsel analiz yöntemi kullanılarak incelenmiş; veri toplama aracı olarak da tarama modeli ve doküman inceleme yöntemlerinden faydalanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda 94 lisans programının hepsinde İngilizce dersinin zorunlu olarak verildiği görülmüş, ikinci yabancı dil olarak ise ağırlıklı olarak Almanca, Rusça ve Fransızca eğitiminin verildiği saptanmıştır. Turizm Fakülte ve Yüksekokullarının yüksek lisans ve doktora programlarında ise dil eğitiminin tamamen ihmal edildiği saptanmıştır.

The tourism sector is a sector that is rapidly growing in the world and in the case of a good assessment of the existing historical and cultural resources in our country can come to a much better level than today. In order to develop the tourism sector on the basis of the country and to increase the income obtained from this sector, it is necessary to increase the number and capacity of tourism enterprises and, parallel to this increase, to bring the quality of services to the highest level. The quality of the service is directly related to the language skills of the staff working in the tourism sector. It is possible to establish a healthy communication with tourists visiting our country that will not cause prejudice, and to perfectly present places with historical and cultural values with good language skills. Therefore, it is important for the tourism sector to get a good language education and to provide well-trained elements in the sector. Based on this connection between language and tourism, this study analyzed the courses for language education provided in the Bachelor and Graduate Programs at the Faculty of Tourism and Higher Schools and discussed whether these courses are sufficient to train elements with good language skills for the tourism sector. There are also recommendations for the improvement of tourism-related undergraduate and master programs to train good language-knowing elements. The research material was used by the 68 universities’ curricula. The work was studied using the visual analysis method; as a data collection tool, it was also used by the scanning model and the document examination methods. The study found that all of the 94 bachelor’s programmes required English lessons, while the second foreign language was primarily German, Russian and French. In the master and doctoral programs of the Faculty of Tourism and Higher Schools, the language education has been completely neglected.

Tourism is a rapidly growing industry worldwide and considering our country it would be much better then today if our existing cultural and historical assets are well utilized. In order to develop tourism sector through whole country and increase the total revenue derived from this industry, primarily the number and capacity of tourism enterprises should be increased at the same time the best service quality should be reached. Service quality in tourism enterprices is directly connected with the language skills of employees. Good language skills will provide to establish an effective communication with tourists visiting our coountry by preventing any prejudices and introducing historical anc cultural sites perfectly. Therefore providing tourism industry with well trained employees that has had a good language education comes into prominence. Based on this connection between tourism and language skills, in this study, lessons towards foreign language education which are educated in Tourism Faculties and Higher School’s graduate and postgraduate programs was analyzed and it was discussed whether these lessons are satisfactory for tourism sector about training qualified person having good command of foreign language or not. Moreover, suggestions about improving graduate and postgraduate’s tourism programs about training qualified person having good command of foreign language was given. The curriculums of 68 universities are assigned as study material. Study conducted with descriptive analysis method and methods of screening model and document review model used as data collection tool. Results point out that English lesson is given by all 94 graduate programmes as compulsory lesson and German, Russian and French languages are educated as second foreign language mainly besides English education. Furthermore, it was identified that foreign language education is totally neglected in all postgraduate programs of Tourism Faculties and Higher Schools.
