Hersek, bugünkü Bosna Hersek Cumhuriyeti’nin bir kısmını oluşturmaktadır. Hersek’in büyüklüğü aslında bugünkü sınırlarından ibaret değildir. Osmanlılara geçmeden önce Hersek olarak bilinen bölge, Drina nehrinden Adriyatik Denizi’ne kadar uzanan yeri içermektedir. Bosna krallığı kurulmadan önce Hersek yönetiminin kime ait olduğu konusu ele alınmıştır. Hersek Almanca “herzog”, yani voyvoda veya dük anlamına gelen “Hersek” adı bilindiği kadarıyla bölgeyi yöneten bir derebeyinin unvanıdır. Bu makalede Hersek’i idare eden önemli derebeylerinin (toprak sahipleri) kraliyet ailesiyle ilişkileri ve Bosna krallığındaki mezhep çatışmaları üzerinde durulmuştur.
