The era of Mahmoud II was the beginning of radical reforms in many areas for the Ottoman Empire. Among these reforms, the censuses that were undertaken to determine the male population had the aim of revealing the characteristics of the whole male population in the Ottoman land for the first time. In the censuses, the first of which was carried out in 1246 of the hegira (c.e. 1830-1831) and then continued at intervals, it was precisely strived to calculate and record the Muslim male population who could perform the military service and the non-Muslims who were liable for cizye, Islamic head-tax levied on non-Muslims. This official survey towards finding out the country’s potential population has the characteristic of a historical source for researchers. Accordingly, the main source of our study is a population register classified with the number 2821 under the date of 1246 of the hegira (c.e. 1830-1831) in the state archives. In this study, by means of this population register, it was tried to analyze and introduce the similarities and differences of the demographic features of the Muslims and non-Muslims both of whom resided in the neighborhoods of the Akhisar Casas of Saruhan Sanctuary at the time of population census. Moreover, by comparing the people's professions in Akhisar, it was aimed to show the inhabitants' ways of earning their livelihoods.
