Abstract:

Obesity is a serious public health problem that often comes with psychiatric comorbidities. Among the methods for weight loss is bariatric surgery that is indicated as one of effective treatments for morbid obesity. This study aimed to verify if individuals undergoing bariatric surgery develop depressive disorders in the postoperative period. This is an integrative review study literature held in databases, BVS, SCiELO, LILACS, Google Scholar and individual search using the following key words: body image, depression, morbid obesity and surgery. We selected 33 scientific productions of the last ten years in the period 2006 - 2016, that deal with the theme. The findings reveals that most individuals do not develop clinical depression after the bariatric surgery, these psychic changes are already present before submitting the procedure.
