İhtida genel anlamda mensubu olduğu dini cemaatten ayrılarak başka bir cemaate dahil olmak anlamı taşımakla beraber, Osmanlı ülkesinde ihtida kavramı sadece İslam düşüncesini belli şartlara haiz olarak, şahitler huzurunda ve kayıt altına alınarak kabul etmeyi tanımlar. Mühtedi ise ihtida eden yani evrakların diliyle “İslam’la şereflenen” erkek Osmanlı tebaası için kullanılan bir ifadedir. Sonradan İslam dinini benimseyen kadın için ise muhtediyye tanımlaması söz konusu olmuştur. Osmanlı Devleti’nin son 100 yıllık zaman sürecinde din değiştirme davranışı bireylerin kendi iradeleri ile yapmış olduğu ve sadece kendileri ile ailelerini alakadar eden bir olay olarak görülmemiştir.1810 tarihinde A.B.D’de kurulan American Board Of Missionaries For Foreign Missions (Amerikan Yabancı Misyonlar Masası) adlı Protestan evanjelik misyoner kurum tarafından Osmanlı Devleti’ne gönderilen misyonerlerin şahsi ve bağlı oldukları kurumla resmi yazışmalarında yer bulunca ihtida olayları adeta batı Hıristiyan dünyası ile İslam halifesinin mülkünde yaşayanlarla bir çatışma gibi aksettirilmiştir. Onlara göre Osmanlı idarecileri İslam’ı, Müslüman olmayanlara temel yaşamsal kaygılarla dayatan bir idaredir. Hayatta kalabilmek için Hıristiyanlar Müslüman olmaktadır düşüncesini savunan söz konusu misyonerler iddialarını kanıtlanamayacak ifadelerle, hem kendi ülkelerinde hem de Avrupa’da sözlü ve yazılı olarak beyan etmişlerdir. Oysa ki ihtida süreçleri Osmanlı makamları tarafından var olan kanun ve nizama göre oldukça dikkatli bir şekilde takip edilmiş ve itiraz söz konusu olduğunda ise gereken tüm tahkikatların yapılması emredilmiştir. Bu çalışmada ABCFM adlı kuruma bağlı olarak Osmanlı mülkünde yaşayan ve çalışan misyonerlerin yazınlarından (seyahatnameler, anılar ve kuruma yazılan raporlar ile bilgi notları) ve Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi’nde bulunan evraktan yola çıkılarak misyonerlerin Osmanlı ülkesinde ihtida gerçekliğine bakışı ile Osmanlı Devleti arşiv kayıtları kıyaslanacaktır.
While it means to be part of the religious community in which it is a member in the general sense and to be included in another community, the concept of custody in the Ottoman country defines the acceptance of the Islamic thought only under certain conditions, in the presence of witnesses and by recording it. It is an expression that is used for the Ottoman tebaat of the man who is "happy with Islam" in the language of the documents. For the woman who adopted the Islamic religion, it was questioned to be defined as a muhtedi. The Ottoman State’s behavior of change of religion in the last 100 years has not been seen as an event that has been done by individuals with their own will and only relates to themselves and their families. The American Board of Missionaries for Foreign Missions (American Board of Missionaries for Foreign Missions) was established by the Protestant evangelical missionary institution sent to the Ottoman State in their personal and affiliated institutions in their official communications, and the events of the guard were acknowledged as a conflict with the Western Christian world and the Islamic Gulf's owned people. According to them, the Ottoman rulers are an administration that imposes Islam on non-Muslims with basic life concerns. Christians to survive have expressed their claims in their own countries and in Europe, with unproofable statements, orally and in writing. However, the custody processes were followed very carefully by the Ottoman authorities according to the existing law and regulations and when it comes to objection, all the necessary investigations were ordered. In this study, according to the institution ABCFM, from the writings of the missionaries living and working in the Ottoman property (travel, memories and information notes with the reports written to the institution) and from the paper found in the Ottoman Archive of the Prime Minister, the missionaries will be compared with the Ottoman State archive records with the view of the reality of the Ottoman country.
