SEKİZİNCİ SINIF ÖĞRENCİLERİNDE OKUMAYA YÖNELİK TUTUM DÜZEYİNİN FARKLI DEĞİŞKENLERE GÖRE İNCELENMESİ

Abstract:

ÖZET Çalışmanın hedefi, sekizinci sınıf öğrencilerinde okumaya yönelik tutum düzeyinin farklı değişkenlere göre incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla 2 araştırma sorusuna yanıt aranmıştır: 1) Okumaya yönelik tutum düzeyinde cinsiyet değişkenine göre anlamlı bir farklılık var mıdır? 2) Okumaya yönelik tutum düzeyi ile Türkçe ve yabancı dil derslerindeki akademik başarı arasında anlamlı bir ilişki var mıdır? Çalışma grubunu Adıyaman’da bulunan 3 ortaokulda öğrenim gören 65’i kız, 66’sı erkek olmak üzere toplam 131 sekizinci sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Okumaya yönelik tutum düzeyi ile ilgili veriler, Özbay ile Uyar (2009) tarafından geliştirilen “Okumaya yönelik tutum ölçeği” kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Akademik başarıya ilişkin veriler ise Türkçe ve yabancı dil derslerindeki yazılı sınav notlarının aritmetik ortalamaları alınarak elde edilmiştir. Her iki veri de 2017-18 eğitim-öğretim yılında toplanmıştır. Toplanan verilerin çözümlenmesinde birinci soru kapsamında bağımsız gruplar t-testi, ikinci soru içinse Spearman korelasyon katsayısı tekniği kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular şu şekildedir: 1) Okumaya yönelik tutum düzeyi puan ortalamalarının kız öğrencilerin lehine istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı farklılık gösterdiği görülmüştür. 2) Yapılan korelasyon analizinde ise 4. boyut dışında kalan her üç boyut ile ölçeğin genelinde okumaya yönelik tutum puan ortalamaları ile Türkçe ve yabancı dil derslerindeki akademik başarı arasında doğru yönlü ve anlamlı ilişkilerin bulunduğu saptanmıştır. Sonuç olarak okumaya yönelik tutum düzeyinin kız öğrencilerin lehine anlamlı bir farklılık gösterdiği ve okumaya yönelik tutum düzeyi ile Türkçe ve yabancı dil derslerindeki başarı arasında benzer ilişkilerin olduğu görülmüştür. Bu da dil öğretiminin bütünsel çerçevede ele alınması gerekliliğini ortaya koymaktadır.

The objective of the study is to study the level of attitude towards reading in eighth class students according to different variables. For this purpose, 2 research questions were sought to be answered: 1) Is there a significant difference in the attitude towards reading based on the gender variable? 2) Is there a meaningful relationship between the level of attitude towards reading and academic success in Turkish and foreign language courses? The study group formed a total of 131 eighth class students, including 65 girls and 66 boys, who studied in 3 high schools located in Namiyaman. The data on the level of attitude towards reading was obtained using the "Listening Attitude Scale" developed by Özbay and Uyar (2009). The data on academic success was obtained by taking the arithmetic average of the written exam notes in Turkish and foreign language courses. Both data were collected in the 2017-18 educational year. In the processing of the collected data, the first question includes independent groups t-tests, and the second question uses the Spearman correlation ratio technique. The findings are as follows: 1) It has been shown that the average score of the attitude towards reading has shown significant differences in statistical terms in favour of girls students. The analysis of the correlation is 4. It has been found that there are correct and meaningful relationships between the three dimensions left outside the scale and the average attitude to study in the scale and the academic success in Turkish and foreign language courses. As a result, the level of attitude towards reading has shown a significant difference in the benefit of girls students and there has been similar relationships between the level of attitude towards reading and success in Turkish and foreign language courses. This also demonstrates the need to address the language teaching in a comprehensive framework.

The data on the level of attitude towards reading were obtained using the "Attitude towards reading scale" developed by Özbay and Uyar (2009). The data on academic achievements of Turkish and foreign language courses were obtained by taking the arithmetic average of the written exam grades. Both data were collected in the 2017-18 academic year. In the analysis of the collected data, independent groups t-test was used for the first question, and Spearman correlation coefficient technique was used for the second question. The findings obtained are as follows: 1) It was observed that the mean scores of the level of attitude towards reading showed a statistically significant difference in favor of female students. 2) In the correlation analysis, it was determined that there were linear and meaningful relationships between the mean scores of attitude towards reading and academic achievement in Turkish and foreign language courses in all three dimensions except 4th. As a result, it was observed that the level of attitude towards reading showed a significant difference in favor of female students and there were similar relationships between the level of attitude towards reading and academic achievement in Turkish and foreign language courses. This puts forth the necessity of considering all aspects of language teaching in a holistic framework.
