Indicators of adiposity in hospitalized elderlies with heart diseases

Introduction: Aging involves changes in body composition and high fat is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Objective: To evaluate the indicators of adiposity of elderly with heart disease admitted in a public hospital of the Federal District. Materials and Methods: 30 participants, aged 60 years and over, male and female. Measurements evaluated: weight; height; waist circumference, hip and neck; body mass index; waist/hip; waist/height; conicity index and fat body per bioimpedance analysis. Results: 60% of male participants, average age of 67,2±5,8 years, 43% with obesity, 56% with diabetes. There was a strong correlation and significance statistics between body mass index and waist circumference (r=0,892; p<0,001). Conclusion: Anthropometric indicators of body mass index, waist circumference and waist/height index perform well in identifying excess body fat in the elderly.
