Abstract:

This study was carried out to examine the violence in the health sector in a public hospital operating in Malatya, to reveal the prevalence of violence, and to determine whether the perception of violence changes according to the personal and demographic characteristics of the employees. Data were collected through a questionnaire. The data of the study were collected between 08.03.2021 and 08.04.2021. Descriptive statistics were computed, and Chi-square analyses were used. The questionnaire was applied to 334 health professionals at a public hospital operating in Malatya. Findings demonstrate that 60.5% of the participants have been a victim of violence at least once in their professional life. The most common type of violence is verbal/psychological violence (59.9%). Physicians (70.7%) and nurses (63.6%) were exposed to violence the most. Education is an important factor to prevent violence in health. It will be beneficial to apply deterrent penalties and legal sanctions. In addition, making use of written and visual media is recommended.
