Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: We tested magnesium infusion for intraoperative anaesthetic requirement and postoperative analgesia during and after gynecologic oncology surgery. METHODS: In a randomized, single blinded study, patients were assigned to two groups. The magnesium group (n=16) received an initial dose of 30 mg/kg followed by 10 mg/kg/h over 20 h. The control group (n=15) received placebo. Blood samples were obtained before magnesium administration, 90 minutes and 24 hours following initial magnesium administration. Plasma Mg were investigated. RESULTS: There were no significant change between two groups in intraoperative propofol and remifentanil requirements. There were no significant change between two groups in sedation score, pain score, heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure, respiratory rate, delivery and demand on PCA device during postoperative 24 h period. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: IV administration of Mg sulfate in our dose, had no effect on postoperative pain and intraoperative propofol and remifentanil consumption.
