Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of creative drama method on Turkish basic language skills in teaching Turkish to foreigners. The study was carried out in the Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center TÖMER within a state university in the spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. Mixed design was used in the research. Turkish proficiency exam and semi-structured interview form were preferred for data collection. In the determination of the study group of the research, criterion sampling method, which is one of the non-random purposeful sampling methods, was used. In the quantitative dimension of the study, a single group pretest-posttest weak experimental design was used. Qualitative data, on the other hand, were obtained by interview forms. The mentioned application lasted for 5 weeks in total. As a result of this study, original drama examples to be used for teaching Turkish to foreigners and a Turkish level determination scale for teaching Turkish to foreigners whose validity and reliability studies were conducted were presented. The Anxiety Scale for Writing Turkish as a Foreign Language was also administered to the participants. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the creative drama applications made to the students were very beneficial in terms of improving the language level, reducing the amount of anxiety in writing skills, and contributing to language skills in general. In line with this result, suggestions were made for the inclusion of creative drama practices in different researches and different teaching processes.
