ACADEMICIANS’ PREFERENCES OF CLOTHING COLOUR AT WORK
2020
Dergi:
International Journal of Eurasian Education and Culture
Yazar:
Özet:

This research aimed at finding out what colours of clothing academicians wear to work in the context of a state university. The research was conducted with convergent parallel design from mixed method research designs. The study was conducted with 93 academic staff (41 Women, 52 Men) working at a state university. The data were collected with the Colour Perception Questionnaire. In the analysis of quantitative data, arithmetic mean, standard deviation and frequency values were used. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The analyses revealed a significant emotional effect of different coloration, depending on the respective attributions and effects, on psychological state and daily lives of academicians, and the resulting effect varied between male and female participants by implications and the message conveyed by each colour. It was found out that female academicians mostly associated colours with comfort, vitality and happiness conditional on their physical and psychological ontogeny, while males indicated a relation between colours and professional performance and perceived colours as a sign of relaxation, self confidence, peacefulness, and success. It was also revealed that the colours of clothes chosen by academicians in business life as a means of expressing themselves and their styles differed by their personal concerns and tastes, physical characteristics, age, social life and status at work. In the light of the findings here, it was recommended to raise awareness of employees about the stimulating effects of colours not only in public institutions but also in private sector institutions through a variety of training activities, seminars or in-service trainings for this purpose, considering the effects of colours on human psychology.
