As a result of the academic education provided by the translation departments at universities, the well-equipped position of the translator candidates who step into the translation profession in the market is directly proportional to the education and training curriculum they receive. This study aims to discover the students’ ability of text analysis at the Press Translation lesson included in translation education curriculum. The research sample of the study consists of the students studying at the third class of Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University/ Department of Translation and Interpretation/ Department of German Translation and Interpreting; and attending the Press Translation lesson, which is an elective course in the 8-semester curriculum of the department. In this study, it will be examined how the mother tongue and cultural knowledge, and translation competences are influential in the translation of the online newspaper news text about Turkey in the German press into Turkish. The roadmap which will be followed in the evaluation of the candidates’ translation competence has been constructed on the two-component model that tries to describe how the students’ mother tongue and cultural capacity, and reading the parallel texts written in their mother tongue are effective in the generate of the target text. It will be tried to describe how the fact that translation candidate students, forming the research sample, have read the parallel texts related to the news text chosen for the press translation before is important in understanding the subject of the source text; how much it contributes to understanding the text; whether it eliminates the lack of knowledge or not; whether the target text is informative on the text type tradition or not; and whether the data obtained as a result of all these information and examinations are approved in the target text or not.
