Günümüzde rekabet üstünlüğü elde edebilmek amacıyla işletmeler üretim maliyetlerini düşürme eğilimi göstermektedirler. Geleneksel maliyet yönetim tekniği bu kapsamda yetersiz kalmakta, bu açık çağdaş maliyet yönetim teknikleri aracılığıyla kapatılmaktadır. İşletmeler çağdaş maliyet yönetim tekniklerine yönelerek bu teknikleri üretim süreçlerinde uygulamaktadırlar. Çağdaş maliyet yönetim teknikleri arasında yer alması gerektiği düşünülen altı sigma yöntemi işletmelerde süreçleri iyileştirerek, hataların minimizasyonunu sağlamayı amaçlayan ve böylelikle maliyetleri düşürmeye yarayan istatistiksel bir yaklaşım olarak ön plana çıkmaktadır. Altı sigma yönteminin benimsenmesi işletmelere maliyet azaltımının yanında rekabet üstünlüğü de kazandırmaktadır. Bu çalışmada altı sigma yönteminin kapsamından bahsedilerek Manisa Organize Sanayi Bölgesinde faaliyet gösteren üretim işletmelerinin altı sigma yöntemini maliyet yönetim aracı olarak kullanılabilirliğini tespit etmek amacıyla 130 işletmeye anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda araştırmaya katılan işletmelerin maliyet azaltım bileşeni olarak büyük oranda toplam kalite yöntemini kullandıkları tespit edilmiştir. İşletmeler toplam kalite yöntemini uygulamak için bir yol haritasına ve danışmanlık ve eğitim almaya ihtiyaç duymaktadırlar. Altı sigma yöntemi uygulamalarında başarısı kanıtlanmış bir yol haritası sunması ve eğitimi ön planda tutması ile toplam kalite yönteminin bahsi geçen eksikliklerini gidermektedir. Bu nedenle araştırmaya katılan işletmelerin altı sigma yöntemini uygulama yolunda potansiyel adaylar olarak nitelendirilebilecekleri söylenebilir.
