Abstract One of the great problems of contemporary society is the rapid urban growth. More and more people live in cities. In many of them, as a result of an increase in the quality of life there is a strong population aging. However, in the public agendas what constitutes a social achievement is assumed as a problem and actions are taken that reinforce a management of population aging centered on the elderly, health care and health. Assume, the challenge of the aging population implies a change of vision about the adult, from an active aging perspective. For this, cities usually designed from a paradigm of modernity and youth must be planned to enable universal accessibility that allows the strengthening of intergenerational relations. In turn, it requires making the public space an area of inclusion that is expressed at the material and subjective level. The study compared between Spain and Cuba shows the potential for change in the city to plunge this perspective of social development. Likewise, it reveals how there are still gaps in daily practices despite the fact that on a macrosocial scale it appears to be apparently resolved.
