Hz. Âdem’e öğretilen isimler, insanoğlunun mahiyetinin bir tezahürüdür. Melekler fizikî olarak varlığını gördükleri insanın gerçek mahiyetini ancak O’nun isimlerden haber vermesi sonucu kavramışlardır. Kur’ân’da isimler insanoğlunun varlıklar âlemindeki üstün konumunun sembolü olarak kullanılmıştır. Tefsirde isimler, ağırlıklı olarak varlığın adları ya da insanın konuşma melekesi, dil olarak açıklanmıştır. Bu açıklamalar elbette ki önemlidir ancak yetersizdir. Hz. Âdem’e öğretilen isimler, halifelikle, zihinle, duyularla, kültürle, insanın ilim ve teknoloji üretme özelliğiyle de yakından alakalıdır. Bu çalışmada, Hz. Âdem’e öğretilen isimler, önce müfessirlerin bakış açısıyla ele alınmış, isimlerin varlıkla, dolayısıyla ilimle ilişkisi değerlendirilmiştir. Bu değerlendirme yapılırken de isimler konusundaki diğer çalışmalardan farklı olarak merkeze insan alınmıştır. Zira isimlerden ziyade insanın isimler karşısındaki konumu daha önemlidir. Ayette isimlerin öğretilmesi, عَلَّمَ/alleme fiiliyle ifade edilmiştir. Dolayısıyla عَلَّمَ/alleme, alem, âlem, ilim ve âlimle aynı kökten türemiştir. Bu sebeple عَلَّمَ/alleme ile alem, âlem, ilim ve âlim kelimeleri arasında bazı bağlantılar vardır. Bize göre Hz. Âdem’e öğretilen isimleri, sadece varlığın adları veya dil olarak yorumlamak yetersizdir. Bunlara ilaveten isimler, başta yaratılış olarak insanın diğer varlıklara karşı üstünlüğüne işaret eder. Yaratılış olarak bu üstünlük, ona son derece gelişmiş sinir sistemi, fiziki ve biyolojik özellikler verilmesiyle öne çıkmaktadır. İnsan, duyuları, zihni, düşüncesi ve algıladığı şeyleri yorumlamasıyla da kültür üreten tek canlıdır. Zira onun kültür üretici bir varlık olması, güçlü bir donanıma sahip olmasından kaynaklanır. İsimler, konuşma, dil, yorum, kültür, ilim ve teknoloji sahibi olan insanın temel ve kurucu bilgileridir.

The names taught to Adam are a manifestation of the nature of man. The Angels only comprehend the true nature of the person they see physically, as a result of his telling them of the names. In the Qur’ān, names are used as a symbol of the superior position of mankind in the realm of beings. In the tafsīr, nouns are described as language, predominantly the names of the being or the angel of speech of man. These explanations are of course important but insufficient. The names taught to Adam are also closely related to the caliphate, the mind, the senses, the culture, and the ability of man to create science and technology. In this study, rather than the names, Man’s position against names is more important. The teaching of nouns in the verse is expressed by the verb عَلَّمَ/‘alleme. Therefore, the verb of عَلَّمَ /‘alleme derives from the same root as the symbol/‘alem, world/‘ālem, science/‘ilim and scholar/‘ālim. For this reason, there are some links between the words عَلَّمَ/‘allama, ‘alem, ‘ālem, ‘ilim and ‘ālim. In our view, it is insufficient to interpret the names taught to Adam as mere names of the creature or language. In addition, names refer to the superiority of man over other beings, primarily as creation. This superiority as creation is distinguished by its highly developed nervous system, physical and biological features. Human beings are the only living thing that produces culture through their senses, mind, thoughts and interpretation of what they perceive. Since it is a cultured being, it is due to having strong equipment. Names, speech, language, interpretation, culture, science and technology are the basic and founding knowledge of the person.
