Abstract:

The research aims to develop the Electronic Visual Dictionary (e-GS) for high school students of 5th grade. For this purpose, the design of a visual dictionary containing the words chosen from the Turkish curriculum has been tried to be improved in accordance with the students and teachers' opinions. To the purpose of the research, it is based on the design-based research (TTA) method that is commonly used for the development of a product, service or system and gives the opportunity to present the product in the form of a principle, theory or educational application. This study follows a design-based process in the form of product design, improvement and reporting/evaluation. The research was carried out in the 5th grade of Aksu Şehit Hakan Shipyard High School in Giresun. The research data has been collected twice in accordance with the topics identified in the design and improvement phase. In the research, the opinions of students and teachers about e-GS hold an important place. In the design-based research process, users (the teachers and students)’ opinions and recommendations about e-GS were gathered through interview forms. In the study, the data collected by the Teacher Interview Form and the Student Interview Form were analyzed by qualitative techniques. The data obtained from the e-GS interview forms have been analyzed by content analysis. The study found that 5th-class students liked e-GS and wanted it to be used in Turkish lessons. Students also asked the dictionary to be prepared for other subjects. Turkish teachers wanted the dictionary to be prepared for other lessons in the same way as the students. The results show that the Electronic Visual Dictionary can be used as an effective teaching technology in vocabulary learning.
