XIX. yüzyılda başlatılan ve XX. yüzyıla geldiğimizde etkinliği daha da artış gösteren turizm faaliyetleri, yaşanan siyasi-sosyal-ekonomik gelişmelerden büyük ölçüde etkilenmiştir. Dünyada meydana gelen turizm faaliyetleri üzerinde, XX. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında yaşanan II. Dünya Savaşı’nın önemli olumsuz etkileri görülürken, Türkiye’de turizm faaliyetleri bu yıllarda daha başlangıç aşamasındaydı. Bu çalışmada 1950 yılına gelinceye kadar Cumhuriyet dönemi Türkiye’sinde turizmin genel durumu ve turizmi geliştirmeye yönelik yapılan girişimler aktarılmış ve 1950-1960 döneminde iktidar partisi olan Demokrat Parti hükümetlerinin programlarında turizmin nasıl yer aldığına ve bu dönemde turizm alanında yapılan girişimlere yer verilmiştir. Turizmi geliştirmeye yönelik çıkarılan kanunlar ve bu kanunlara duyulan ihtiyaçlar, Türkiye’nin dönemsel şartları da dikkate alınarak yapılan çalışmalarla birlikte değerlendirilmiştir. Böylece turizm tarihi alanına katkı sağlamak hedeflenmiştir. Çalışma, ülkemiz ekonomisinde önemli bir yeri olan turizmin farklı disiplinler tarafından incelenmesine örnek oluşturmayı da hedeflemiştir.

Tourism activities which were started in XIX th century and its affects increased in the XXth century got affected from political-social-economical developments. While the negative effects of World War II which happened in the second half of XX th century on the tourism activities around the world were experiencing, tourism activities in Turkey were at the beginning stage in those years. This study, general situation of tourism in Turkey in Republic Period up to year 1950 and initiatives to improve tourism were stated and how tourism was included in the program of Democrat Party government which was the ruling party in 1950-1960 period and initiatives in tourism in this period were mentioned. Laws passed to improve tourism and needs for these laws were evaluated in accordance with the studies carried out by considering the conditions of Turkey in that period. Thus, it is aimed to contribute to the field of tourism history. The study aimed to set an example for the analysis of tourism which has an important place in our countrys economy by all disciplinary branches.
