Doğu Akdeniz’de jeopolitik önemine bağlı olarak Avrupa, Asya ve Afrika kıtaları arasında kilit noktada bulunan Kıbrıs, tarih boyunca birçok farklı topluma ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Ada, uzun yıllar İngiliz sömürge idaresi altında bulunduktan sonra, 1960 yılında Türkler ve Rumların çoğunluğunda olduğu bir cumhuriyete dönüşmüş, 1974 yılından günümüze kadar Ada’nın kuzey tarafı Türklerin, güney tarafı ise Rumların yaşadığı bir bölge haline gelmiştir. 1983 yılında, Ada’nın kuzeyindeki Kıbrıs Türkleri KKTC adı altında (hukuksal açıdan sadece Türkiye tarafından tanınan) bağımsız bir devlet ilan ederken, Rumlar 2004 yılında Avrupa Birliği üyesi olmuştur.
Situated at the maritime crossroads of the eastern Mediterranean basin, Cyprus has a rich and varied history. Many invaders, settlers and immigrants have come here over the centuries. The birth of the new and independent Republic of Cyprus was realized on 16 August 1960. In 1975, the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus was declared. After eight years of failed negotiations with the leadership of the Greek Cypriot community the north unilaterally declared its independence on 15 November 1983 under the name of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This was rejected by the UN and the Republic of Cyprus. The declaration of a Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was recognized by no nation other than Turkey. Cyprus entered the European Union
