Abstract:

Aşk-ı Memnu is one of the most successful novels of Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil. One of the reasons for the success of the novel is the level the author achieves in his fictionalization of the characters. The psychology of the characters also requires a separate evaluation. In this way, this article aims to analyze the characters in the novel Aşk-ı Memnu with a psychoanalytic analysis. Psychoanalysis is known as a theory by Sigmund Freud that centers on consciousness in particular. According to this theory, at the basis of the behavior of people lies the behaviors which are kept in the subconscious and which cannot come out because of social pressures. Therefore, psychoanalysis can be used to evaluate the psychological properties of characters in literary studies. This article focuses on the psychologically evaluable characters Bihter, Nihal, Mrs. Firdevs, Mr. Adnan and Behlül. The emotion that dominates the novel is jealousy. The characters around this sensation are examined. Moreover, the relations between Firdevs Hanım and her daughters Bihter and Peyker, Adnan Bey and his daughter Nihal, Adnan Bey and her wife Bihter, Bihter and Behlül who had forbidden love are reviewed from a psychoanalytical point of view.
